“He will reign on David’s throne”

These words are familiar to us as Isaiah 9.1-7 is one of the passages read in churches all over the world at Christmas.  We celebrate that they are fulfilled in Christ’s birth: “for to us a child is born, to us a son is given . .” (v 6).

But when will Christ “reign on David’s throne” (v 7)?  Is he already fulfilling this prophecy as he sits enthroned in heaven at the right hand of the Father, following his ascension to heaven?  Or does it await his second coming?

I have sought to answer this and related questions by exploring what James meant in Acts 15.16 when he quoted the words of Amos, “After this I will return and rebuild David’s fallen tent . .” (Am 9.11f).  You will find the downloadable document at the bottom of the Prophecy Toolkit page.

Let me know what you think and whether you agree with my conclusions.
